It's a distinct lack of education
To out myself, I'm actually in education in America. Though it has serious flaws, I don't know that the education system can take the full blame for this one.
My major worries at the moment are: firstly, the instant access to information, which students prioritize instead of doing any heavy lifting with their own minds (especially as AI is being thrust on to them to do the thinking for them), and secondly, the lack of accountability from within the system and without, as parents and administrators refuse to place any boundaries on student behavior.
Both of those things seem to be crippling any growth beyond primary school.
America is a really fucking big country, and the quality of your education varies so wildly.
I've been in the US education system and others, the US system is definitely gimped in so many ways. Albeit, while in others I learned more, in the US system I learned how to touch type thanks to some stupid asterisk character called Qwerty - other countries would've left me to just learn online (which is ultimately where I really cut my teeth, but the foundation gave me a level up).
