My Costco in northern Japan yesterday: regular gasoline: 145 JPY (0.8137 EUR) / litre. Diesel: 135 (0.7575).
Non-costco regular gasoline has gone as high as 169 JPY (~ 0.95 EUR) recently.
I'm pretty sure the government has price caps and subsidizes things. Out here in the deep countryside, there's no practical choice aside from driving.
