I like the idea of fold tech but I just wish it unfolded to a proper aspect ratio.

Imagine an iPhone that unfolds into an iPad.

Edit: just looked it up, itโ€™s 4:3, which is not bad but imo itโ€™s also not good

It is literally the aspect ratio of every iPad, though ๐Ÿ˜…

Something like 16:10 or 16:9 would make it very square when folded. IMO the most satisfying aspect ratio would be โˆš2:1, like A4 paper, so that the aspect ratio when closed and open is the same.

It is actually closer to โˆš 2 as itโ€™s stated as 1.4:1 on both screens, so slightly wider than iPad unfolded

Well shit that shows how little I know about tablets

You know, I hope this becomes something people like, cause why not, we need some tech wins these days.

iPhone Duo literally has an aspect ratio of 1.4:1 (โˆš2:1) both when closed and open.

Awesome! I just assumed OP was right when they said 4:3 ๐Ÿ˜… But 1.4:1 makes much more sense for the form factor.

I'm the kind of contrarian who thinks we should have stuck with 4:3 in general, it's a better framing for a lot of content and it also makes the vertical video problem a lot less annoying in my view.

Meanwhile I switched to ultrawide

[-] sompreno@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

The problem with that is that nobody wants an 8:9 screen for the folded in form factor

[-] ElderReflections@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, give me a long boi 16:5

I think the durability is the limiting factor in regards to foldable tech as it stands right now

[-] warm@kbin.earth 2 points 1 day ago

Also, they are worse phones. The flip style makes more sense as a foldable. I don't think there will ever be much market for them.

[-] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 18 hours ago

Something I keep hearing from others and think that myself - once you go foldable, you don't want to go back. I don't think I'll ever buy a non-foldable again.

[-] warm@kbin.earth 3 points 16 hours ago

Maybe when they are cheap and durable, but until then, completely off the table for >99% of the market. But as they are right now, there will just be a niche.
