Big Tech and Big Oil have fused – Call it Fossil Tech
(naomiklein.substack.com)
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
That requires investment, planning, management, extra land for the amount of panels needed etc. Using fossil fuels is easy and compact. You just bring a bunch of engine powered generators and pump the fuel.
Also extra transmission distance for the power if you're doing solar. I'd be surprised if those datacenters weren't right on top of the generators. Or below. Whatever.
Only other thing required is to ignore the law and environmental protection regulations but that is no big deal in the US it seems.
