Some people are still upset about napster.

[-] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 112 points 1 day ago

yeah I am. fuck them.

they were only anti establishment until they got rich off of said establishment, then they were all like ohhh yes establishment yes give me more more establishment yeesssss.

/probably lyrics to their shit songs. idk.

[-] Concave1142@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago

Are you me?! I've hated them since all the Napster shit back in the day and always turned the radio when "Mandatory Metallica" would come on. I'd rather sit in silence.

Then they did everyone a favor and made music after the Black Album that was absolute garbage. Load & Reload we're both Loads of shit... pun intended.

[-] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 16 points 1 day ago

maybe you are me? I agree with all that.

Hell yeah baby. I love when current slang is just referencing mid 2000s memes only weirdos on 4chan knew about.

[-] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

dead internet theory confirmed. we are all me.

[-] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

Soul fracture theory? Ugh... fine

[-] too_high_for_this@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Wow, I didn't know Mandatory Metallica was a thing, I just thought the local DJ really liked them.

I still rock out to Master of Puppets but I think bad things about James Hetfield afterwards

[-] noxypaws@pawb.social 3 points 1 day ago

have you listened to "Torturing James Hetfield" by Chumbawamba? It's pretty amusing!

[-] Hawke@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Their post-black-album shittiness predates the Napster idiocy by 4 years. They went to shit before they shot themselves in the foot.

I still think Master of Puppets is a fantastic album though.

Mandatory Metallica

was this just a Milwaukee 102.9 (if I remember right) thing or also in other regions??

[-] Tower@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Basically every rock and roll radio station has it

[-] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 3 points 1 day ago

Ffs is this the reason why I get along with so many folks on the fedi?

This needs to be researched fully.

Did napster directly lead to the fediverse? Brave researchers, begin!

[-] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 8 points 1 day ago

well I'm here because fuck spez and reddit. I was relatively unaware of fediverse and activity pub. ...but somehow totally aware of how slow matrix is going.

[-] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 1 points 1 day ago

I mean me too, I'm talking core though.

The kind of people who would get pissed off about reddit like with the apicalypse are the same kind of people who would get mad about metallica and napster, don't you think?

[-] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

They did something else too, it's on the edge of my memory, ugh, in the last 5 years, something they said, oh that's going to bother me all day till it randomly pops in my head later (at 3am).

And the rest are still upset about St. Anger.

[-] Cort@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Why use a snare without snare wires? BONK BONK BONK BONK BONK, is all I hear when I listen to st anger

[-] decolo@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

And here's Lars, on the trash cans...

[-] Tempus_Fugit@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

You say that, and I hate that album, but it's a legendary meme now and that's probably better than if it was Load/Reload 3.0.

My name was on that first list of 150k. I never really liked Metallica to begin with and only snagged like 2 songs for a gym mix someone requested for track practice.

[-] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

They are also just kind of shitty people in general.

They've spent their entire lives with everyone telling them they were gifted musical idols, and they are to an extent. That doesn't make them great or useful people though.

They won't build you a house, or heal the sick, or drill a well, or take away your garbage, but they are good at what they do.

[-] BC_viper@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Funny enough. Vanilla ice would build you a house.

[-] volore@scribe.disroot.org 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

you'd think they'd have moved on, we have soulseek now

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

With it being so not-mainstream I actually feel safe on soulseek sharing my lib.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm upset about the human pile of shit they call a drummer. Clearly, when Cliff Burton died he took all the talent with him.

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Are you a drummer? Cause I feel like drummers always hate Lars. I know nothing about drumming, and they all seem the same to me.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 day ago

He's just a giant asshole, that's my main beef with him. For example, when they played in Bulgaria back in the day, he did an interview on TV and he was wearing two rolexes, one on each wrist.

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

oh, gotcha. This is probably legit.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

i'm just a percussionist, not a drummer (if you ask i will lie and say i play wood block) and i wouldn't say hate, but i really dislike lars. if he bought me a drink i'd decline.

[-] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

yea that’s when I gave up on those shills

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The Metallica show I saw they were touring with Five Loser Death Punch. FFDP made plenty of right wing dog whistle comments through their set, and there’s no secret about how they want to be percieved.

I have never been to a tour where the main band doesn’t choose supporting bands that generally align with their views. Sometimes the less-popular band gets to say what the main one doesn’t want to themselves.

The atendees flew trump flags, thin blue line flags, amd Gadsden flags in the parking lot. They wore militia-style shirts and hats (crossed rifles, “freedom” slogans, raggedy flag shirts, etc). They were everywhere.

Metallica’s public image is highly curated, but everything I found about them points toward “highly conservative rich white dudes with few consequences” beliefs. The attendee’s display of thier politics just seals it.

I was a very long time Metallica fan, from the RtL, MoP, and AJfA days. I thought they were way out of line when it came to threatening fans over the whole Napster thing, but the right wing BS I saw at the concert ensures I’ll never listen to them again.
