That was an unusually good interview. Variety tends to soft peddle things, and there was plenty of that. But the good questions got answered, and Snyder gave some interesting answers.
It's "soft pedal" like on a piano but since they're an industry-promoting magazine, "peddle" is not wrong

I always thought it was the opposite of a hard sale/sell rather than a music thing. Etymology is so fun :)
