What happens is that authoritarians wrap their fake promises in "communism" because it's what actually appeals to most people, only to drop their facade once in power.
Then idiots point and say Ha! See? Communism evil!
Kinda an inevitably under communism though. If the people who run a communist government stops actually believing in communism after being a couple generations removed from the revolution, what is exactly going to oppose them when they absolute power over their citizens?
Thus why the communist governments we've seen end up being contradictory. You could argue that we try to achieve communism by establishing a stateless society like marx adovcated for, but then how is communism going to be enforced without a state? With a state though, they end up being the very upper class that communism seeks to eliminate but this time with a centralized force of power.
