I really, really wish that there were laws that forced companies to allow people to unlock their devices once they lose support. Sony don't make any money from PS3s any more, so why not allow people to unlock them and tinker?

Probably because there is stuff inside that Sony is licensing and can't share access to since they had to pay. Like h264.
