I’m in tech myself and somehow still employed. Mostly because I got into the field early and have like 18+ years under my belt. I have friends that have since left the field entirely and this feels like it will be my last tech job.
same here on all accounts except it's been 22 years for me and the knowledge that my autism scares off most employers makes me aware that it won't be my choice that this is my last tech job.
i'm convinced that's how i got started in the first place -- i didn't have the education or experience, but i knew how to recompile a kernel and knew what bash was so i got hired at a time when there was a deep enough labor shortage for people in the field. it makes me feel sorry for the people graduating today since the fields are so saturated today.
the funniest/worst part is that i was a software engineer for over 10 years of it -- but kept earning and IT salary because of my lack of experience. so i could have been well off enough to survive my 50's+ years if someone had just told me or if levels.fyi had existed sooner. lol
I followed kind of a similar path. I didn’t go to school or anything for programming. It was my natural learning path from the graphic design field after seeing how web development was blowing up. On top of that, my dad was an MS-DOS nerd, so he had me navigating a terminal when I was like 12. So I never needed hand-holding at jobs. I was definitely underpaid for quite a while before I started connecting more and more with others in the field.
i envy you for your dad. mine was convinced that the computer would rot my brain. lol
edit: now that i think of it, i think he was right. lmao
My dad would hate the shit we have now, but I’m thankful for what he taught me. I still feel lucky to have experienced the internet in its best form. My first internet provider was Prodigy.
