Honestly, I'm amazed opposition to Israel was as high as it was before the war on Iran. The genocide had negligible impact on fuel prices, food prices, employment, or any direct material thing in the lives of yankees. Yet, they hated it. It was really heartening!
It gives me hope that, maybe, yankees aren't solely motivated by gas jumping 40 cents in the past week.
In a lot of ways it was kinda inevitable from a cultural point of view. A lot of support for Israel has been historically driven by the Holocaust but as multiple factors have changed over the decades the direct support originating from the Holocaust and leading to Israeli support has slowly dried up. Between Israel being a genocidal shithole, the Holocaust fading into secondary memory, and the Holocaust being recognized as not just a Jewish but something that effected basically every minority have caused some of the collapse in support we've seen.
Note I am not trying to underplay the horrors of the Holocaust and how much energy was focused on the Jewish people, I am simply lacking in the verbage required to not sound like a bit of a dick.
Also the interconnected nature of the modern world makes Israels actions far more upfront and harder to suppress, we are far along from Jack Churchill making comments on the viciousness of it all but him being ignored.
The opposition to Zionist Israel has been growing slowly for a long time. I only learned about it in 2011 (though it wasn't difficult to convince me that Israel and the US support was out of line).
Gas prices are immediate consequences. Its damn near impossible for people outside the US to know how vital car ownership is. As an example, I have a close friend who has split custody of her child, but the dad lives about a 45 minute drive away in a very tiny town. No buses or trains (not even tracks) between the two. And a 45 minute drive on highways at 65mph. (No she didnt support the war before this FYI).
This is considered "nearby." I have a friend with a 140 mi round trip commute. My parents are a 20 minute drive away. A large chunk of the rest of my family is a 9 hour drive away. Buses, trains, bikes, its all not a thing we can do.
Gas prices isn't about the cost to drive. Gas prices directly impact our entire lives. (Thank fuck I have an EV now).
