HL2's airboat and vehicle sections weren't on-rails like this. You could get out and explore at any point with all the mechanics available to you. They even made it into a gigantic wave defense set piece for the final battle at the end of Episode 2.
I was saying that half life 2s iconic vehicle sections caused the industry to attempt to copycat that in many many games in the 2000s-2010s
