Xylitol was recently in the news for a study that linked it to higher risk of heart attack and stroke, so there's that.
I tried some xylitol gum some years back that made me feel unwell, although that might have been because of some other ingredients that I've since realized I'm sensitive to. But based on my generally-poor reaction to artificial sweeteners, I try to stick with plant-based alternatives, like stevia and monkfruit... or just plain old regular sugar.
Xylitol is a naturally occurring plant-based substance, known as a "sugar alcohol". Usually it's extracted from corncobs, but various fruits also contain small amounts, and your body produces tiny amounts.
Monkfruit absolutely obliterates me.
