Anyone who feels their "job" is insulted by someone else whose "job" is shittier than their own also calling it their "job", is a selfish and ignorant twat who wants to make themselves feel better about their shitty lot in life by punching down at people who have it worse. We're all in this together. It's certainly not the doordash drivers fault we are where are. Aim your barbs and criticism upwards.
I'm speaking from my own experience.
When I was between jobs, I had to rely on those apps to make what little money I could. Anytime I was out on the road, I just felt fucking insulted at the absolute scraps the apps pay out in return for some ridiculous hoops they ask you to go through. From outright hiding what you really get paid for completing an order, to allowing people to completely remove the "tip" (read: "salary") after the fact; it just didn't feel worth it to be doing 2-3 $5, ~10 mile orders an hour.
You're right that Doordash and Ubereats are garbage companies and that 'gig economy' jobs suck for the people who work them. I think people are reacting to this piece, because it mirrors a very common way that people denigrate difficult jobs as being not real work. Many folks use similar language to say that real and difficult employment is not true labor. While you seem to understand the difficulty of doing the work
DoorDash and Uber and whoever else gaslit all these drivers into voting against their own interests a while back. They had the opportunity to get a real wage and be classified as employees. They instead voted to remain contractors that can legally be fucked over by the companies that pay them.
While I don't agree with your first statement that this type of gig works is an insult to people who clock in, I have to agree with you that's it's a scam to keep the working class down.
Jobs that you have to clock in at are being reduced all over the place at the moment for all kinds of reasons including the shift to AI for things like cashiers so no, I'm not going to look down on people trying to make a living in this crap society.
Back in the day, god I sound old, yes it was that restaurants had to have their own delivery drivers and was an employee of the restaurant and had to either pay for their vehicle or pay for their milage. Yeah, no every restaurant could afford to do so but at least they had a guaranteed income and work protections.
This bullcrap of being independent contractors where you're at the complete mercy of the general pubic, which is on average full of horrible people in my opinion, and having to pay for your own wear and tear of your personal vehicle and no protections now from customers or the corporation is just another way to exploit the working class.
It's also a violation of labor laws in many places. It is often forbidden to contract out more than 50% of the primary work done by your company, and they do 100%. Nearly every action this company takes is a violation of a law already on the books, but they got rich enough to bribe away the consequences before they happened.
I'm semi rural and I pull 24/hr regularly.
