Outside of the US it's less common to hook to the hot side, but it's the norm in the US. The non US models take longer to wash because they have to heat each water exchange up from completely cold to like 130f. Most of Europe actually gets to have a leg up over the US for electric water heating elements to work a bit faster, because the electric grid in US runs at 120v and 60hz instead of 230v and 50hz. The higher voltage can heat water quicker. I don't know where you live.
