AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

I feel like both positions are wrong (and obvious attempts to either make this product more impressive than it currently is or avoid meaningful regulations). There is not currently evidence that LLMs pose such an existential threat to humanity, but that's not to say there won't be.
A much bigger threat as it stands is these companies having such terribly safety processes that their technology keeps acting in unexpected ways. These are not companies that should have a financial stake in energy infrastructure, not to mention the further consolidation of power by these douchebag billionaires.
Nuclear weapons -- and probably some other things i dont even know about -- pose an existential threat to humanity. AI is simply the newest popular technology, every time that happens there's a threat of evil people using it for evil means.
