No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

This creates new problems. Prisons are expensive to build and operate. Is a person's desire to be viewed and treated as a gender other than the one provided by nature worth that cost?
Gender isn't provided by nature.
How so? Could you point at a social behavior in another animal that you'd evaluate as arising from something other than nature? Not saying you're wrong, just curious.
When people use the word "nature" in this context, it evokes (intentionally or otherwise) the dichotomy of nature vs. nurture, where nature tends to refer to innate traits that would exist regardless of upbringing or social experiences. From that lens, most social behaviours in animals would be better understood as being a result of "nurture". An amusing example from my own life is that I used to have a dog that had spent its entire life around cats after being found as an extremely young puppy. The sounds he made when begging for attention were like nothing I had ever heard from a dog before, because he was trying to emulate the cat sounds.
I get why you're confused though, because the line between nature and nurture is fuzzy at best. Indeed, this is why the scientific consensus on the matter is that rather than "nature vs. nurture", it's better to think of it as "nature via nurture", where nature and nurture are constantly in dialogue with each other, and can't really exist separate from each other. An example of "nature via nurture" might be if someone was genetically predisposed to be extremely tall, but they experienced significant malnourishment throughout their life — they probably wouldn't end up being tall
Sex is provided by nature, gender is a human-specific construct. Animals don't have genders.
It sure is. We have the xx chromosome and the xy chromosome. Trust the science.
