All politics are identity politics. Republicans have long mocked this notion, treating the very concept of “identity politics” as a left-wing fixation. In reality, the GOP’s success is entirely due to the cheapest form of identity politics: For decades, but especially now, they have worked to distract voters from the party’s ruinous policies with appeals to their identity as white, provincial and, most importantly, Christian. This campaign has been enormously successful. White evangelicals have been the backbone of the GOP for decades not because they love tax cuts for the rich and environmental degradation, but because they have been told, repeatedly, that Democrats are demonic and there is no such thing as a liberal Christian.

This is why there’s a growing panic in the Republican ranks over the campaign of James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Texas, and it’s not just fear that he could beat Ken Paxton, the state’s Republican attorney general. Win or lose, Talarico — a seminary student-turned-politician — embodies an existential threat to the right’s long-standing myth that to be Christian must necessarily mean voting Republican.

I hope you're right and some day the Trans community gets all the rights they ask for. My fear is that this community will be fine with bashing every Democrat in a competitive district until all we have left is republicans. They will be glad to show you what real human rights issues look like.

dunno how many times i have to assert - I'm not in texas and told my fam there to vote for him.

but you can be disappointed and still vote for harm reduction. voting for harm reduction - in this case, paxton's anti-everything-good-silly-ass - should come with people knowing you don't agree with the candidate's positions everywhere.

stop lionizing imperfection.

I never said you were in Texas... Not sure why you keep saying that....

replying to your fears dearie. it's ok, go back to sleep. it's what you're good at.

Maybe you don't know how to read, sweety pie, but that doesn't say, or even imply that you live in Texas. You can impact the public perception of a candidate even if you don't live there.

aw, bless your heart. nobody cares about what you think.

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

You have a funny way of saying you're wrong. But I accept your apology.

[-] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Yet again, your interpretation of reality is hilariously incorrect and you've derived the dumbest conclusion.

You are consistently stupid, which I guess is something to be proud of.

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

And yet, you were wrong about what I said multiple times, and when I call you out, your response is

aw, bless your heart. nobody cares about what you think.

This is sociopath type behavior. We can disagree on opinions, but when you respond to being factually wrong like this, it's clear you got problems.

[-] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Oh now you're a psychotherapist? wow....

your opinions are garbage. gonna block you now so I never have to hear another

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Not if I block you first
