The roll method is great.
What kind of duvet did you get? A cover is good enough for most superficial dirt, but if your cats have a tendency to pee on your bed, you might want to protect it more than that, especially if it's a feather or silk duvet which you can't easily wash.
Even a flat sheet isn't super necessary, since the duvet cover is fully washable, and should absorb any dirt/body oils from, but it never hurts! I am a fan of the flat sheet.
In the grand scheme of things a mattress is much more expensive(and harder to clean) than a duvet, and so it's more important to keep the mattress protected, but if you want to protect your duvet that's up to you.
I aint takin so chances. It was expensive and like you said, i probably cant wash it so easy
