It most certainly is on the continental plate of Europe (which is a little hard to define anyways). It's not the mainland part of the continental plate, but still on the continental plate of Europe.
But "continents" as we typically use them are just made up anyway. Or can any asain country join the EU since the are on the same plate? India gets lumped in with Asia when it is on its own plate. The boundaries are all made up so if they don't want Britain to be a part of Europe they're free to do it.
