I did try to search for the answer before posting, but I'm not the best at that stuff. Sorry if there's already an answer for this somewhere.

I like to have separate accounts for stuff. I like to have one where I can discuss movies, and then another one where I can talk about video games, music, and basically all my other interests. It feels better to compartmentalize them this way. I didn't want to go ahead with the idea without checking first.

The rules may vary from instance to instance but I think it's generally fine. The main thing to avoid is vote manipulation - don't vote on something with more than one account, and don't upvote your own stuff from your other accounts.

You also don't want to use another account for ban evasion. If you've been banned from a community or instance, then don't post there with your other account.

Well, and if you have too many accounts, it can also be annoying to people. For example, there's a user on here called cm0002, who's made it his mission to repost content from lemmy.ml communities to other instances.
Lots of people just think that adds noise and would like to not see his reposts, ergo block him. But he also has a user account on virtually every Lemmy instance, so you have to blocks a ton of accounts...

But yeah, if you're a normal human being, likely neither of these are a problem. 😅

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?

I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to help vitalize non-.ml comms and make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don't want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some active niche comms.

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can't even put them all here because this comment would be really long.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda

On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

Sorry. In my head I had posted a complete thought, but in reality I left out the context. If you've grabbed all of cm0002's accounts on one account, then you can export those account settings, export the settings for the other accounts, and make the blocklists the same for all the accounts, then reimport them. That might not be simpler than just blocking them whenever you see them, but it's workable. You could also manually add to the blocklist if you knew all his accounts/instances.

I wouldn't be shocked if one day there wasn't some third party tool for managing/sharing blocklists.

I checked my blocklist and didn't have any of your accounts blocked. I usually block obvious advertising accounts, or accounts that are en masse reposting reddit stuff (blocking lemmy.durstig.online was the reason I made an account in the first place).

The niche comms/subreddits remains as a problem. It's hard to look at labor-of-love content and realize that some old newsgroup stuff is easier to access than newer reddit posts. At least the people who have the old newsgroups archived arent' constantly changing/filtering so that you see something new every time you look.
