I generally trust Wirecutter and they recommend the Black+Decker 20V Max Dustbuster AdvancedClean+ Cordless Pet Hand Vacuum HHVK515JP0
2 cat l, 2 dog house: I have the Ryobi dual roller from this list and if you're in the US, the $250 sale price is a bargain with the 4ah battery and charger (don't be fooled by the single roller variant).
Then you have a battery that can run all kinds of other tools or gadgets you might want in the future.
I will say that if your primary use is handheld, then it is a bit awkward. But it's way better than the Dyson v8 we have upstairs.
