Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Nope. Reddit appeals to the same type of people that use AI. It’s army of bots will tell them exactly what they want to hear, and the authoritarian clowns that mod that shithole will ban anyone for speaking out against the hive.
So, as long as you agree with everyone and are okay with everyone agreeing with whatever you say in subs that don’t allow anyone to speak freely, you’ll be fine.
Basically, it’s the social media equivalent of a HOA nightmare.
I'll make a wild guess that you too came here from reddit. That makes you one of those people. We're all just redditors telling ourself a comforting story about how we're better than those people over there.
I certainly make no bones about it, I miss parts of it. Reddit had fervent hobby subs that just aren't here or are barely here. Memes are cool, and news is important, but unless gaming or Linux are your primary hobbies, this place is severely limited. And I've heard the old "be the change you want to see" adage , but I have no interest, no idea how, and no time for starting or moderating a community. Hell, I can barely make myself post when I think I have a subject of interest because I might have to answer too many replies/comments. But man, what I would give for an active bonsai or diy electronics comm.
Is a rat fleeing a sinking ship still a ship's rat? A fair few people moved to reddit from Digg, and 4chan once the /pol/ cancer metastatised all over it a bit later on. I preferred forums personally until reddit ate most of them, and now reddit is a shithole I'm on Lemmy and have nothing to do with reddit, don't even lurk there now. The kind of people with a low threshold for moving aren't necessarily representative of the group they're leaving; I don't think we'll see a really massive migration from reddit, and I don't think we'd actually benefit from it either.
You have to enjoy a place while you can, either outright failure or Eternal September awaits every online community eventually. One day people will bang on about this being Lemmy's golden age, before the legions of dopamine jockeys found it. Personally I quite like how discussions taking place over days rather than hours makes Lemmy genuinely pretty different from reddit, even if it's mostly made up of ex-redditors.
