You joke but the last few decades of commissions, court cases, and acknowledgements have played a big part in rebuilding our relationship with our indigenous Canadians, and is why indigenous Canadians tend to lean on our courts and themselves lend us our legitimacy as a nation. Britian signed deals with real nations to secure its place here, in doing so, recognized indigenous sovereignty within Canada. Joke all you want, these are positive developments in our journey together.

Agreed. This is one of those things where legally binding agreements and a ton of money is the basic first step to reconciliation. It has to go so much further, but Canada is the only post-colonial (many argue still-colonial) country that has reparations on the agenda and in the curriculum.

Which is fascinating because 10 years ago our governments on all levels were fighting tooth and nail against the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

For those that seek a future that brings together the best of the insights and objectives of people who, within the social democratic and democratic socialist traditions, have worked through farmer, labour, co-operative, feminist, human rights and environmental movements, and with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, to build a more just, equal, and sustainable Canada within a global community dedicated to the same goals.
