As a french, I have to disagree with this being called french.
That said it looks good and I will probably do something similar in the recent futur.
As far as I know French toast is as French as French fries.
French Toast is actually French in origin - called pain perdu ("lost bread").
What we would recognize as French Toast predates "Pain perdu" its earliest known origins are in the 4th century Roman cookbook Apicius. It was bread soaked in milk, honey and egg, fried, and drizzled with more honey.
Oh yeah, and I suspect there were versions even earlier than that we just don't have records of - finding uses for stale bread would likely be as old as bread itself. I more meant the origin of what's called "French toast" is indeed the French, not that they invented the concept.
So we have Belgium to thank.
French fries are French in origin though.
Or Belgian. There is a debate.
Paris, Texas?
Well we do eat something somehow similar but it is made with stall bread. I might be wrong but I feel the tenderness of you bread through the picture. What french people called "pain perdu" is meant to save otherwised lost bread. That's the whole point and soul of the dishes. That's why fresh toast bread (that's french will treate more as a delicacy as actual bread) is antithesic to the dish.
This was two day old bread. I never use fresh bread for French toast.
Here is the same loaf of bread the day before when it was 24 hours old.
I stand corrected and I sincerly apologize for assuming.
If it makes you feel better I grew up calling it 'eggy bread'
It does. Thank you.
