AI market needs to make $6 trillion a year by 2031 to fund its infrastructure habit

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
The end goal is to replace labor
Might be... But then who's going to pay those $6T to Anthropic and/or OpenAI when there is no longer an economy?
History has been consistent in showing that capitalism gives zero cares about long term consequences for short term profit.
They can't see past their next set of financial statements and their stock prices. They are unable to act in long term interest, just as capital has outsourced our industry and destroyed the base of consumers that were buying their products in the first place.
Who knows what they think though, they are all very impressed with themselves and their ability you can be sure, they could well have very warped views on how it would play out if they got their way.
I think it is non-manual labour that they want to replace. In their world, people will still have to earn money, but not with their brain or expertise but with their hands and/or bodies.
Well, Robotics is (allegedly) making big progress too. Have you seen those robot dogs replacing security guards, self-driving cars replacing human drivers, or the level of automation reported in Chinese car factories? Even warfare has changed, largely automating the once manual job of murdering your neighbors.
But that aside, even if manual labor still exists in this future automation dystopia, if it's all that's left, the economy will still shrink considerably.
Once labor is replaced it can be liquidated. 8 million humans will own all the earth and it's resources no need to share with the other 8 billion anymore.
It is not going to though. And even if it was capable of that, it still wouldn't provide them with anything near 6 trillions.
