I do recall that he talked about feeling incredibly alienated after the sale, because people only wanted to talk to him, for his money. He couldn't make genuine connections. That kind of thing really fucks with you, and it wouldn't surprise me if it exacerbated existing problems.
But also, like... Look at the Villagers. They deal in commerce, have but noses, and are protected by golems. He was always a shithead. Being a rich shithead only made him worse
