That happened after the Nixon presidency.
It started in the 50s, ironically because the GOP couldn’t make gains in the south, so they started to appeal to southern white racists to get their vote. It wasn’t a quick thing
Quick edit, I should say its roots started in the 50s. Nothing of which belays the point that the GOP that freed the slaves is the same GOP that likes to say they are the party of Lincoln
I think it really started in the 30s, with the understanding of psychology for marketing.
