I am running EndeavourOS with XFCE4 and when I enter my password the underscore cursor appears in the top left corner for a moment then I get bounced back to the log in screen. This happened after an update. I don't think I made any other alterations to the system or installed new packages.

From my searching around I tried the following from the terminal:

ls -lah | grep -i Xauthority says that I have rw privileges.

I've tried updating my system using sudo pacman -Syu and yay -Syu.

df -h Says I have 18GB available in /dev/dm-0. I even deleted a couple files to make sure I had space available.

I ran rm ~/.Xauthority.

I made sure session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession was in my lightdm.conf.

I tried downgrading the xfce4-session package but that didn't work so I updated it again.

I checked to see if I have libxfce4ui-devel installed instead of libxfce4ui. I only have libxfce4ui installed.

I ran systemctl start xfce4-notifyd.service but it says "Failed to start xfce4-notifyd.service: Unit xfce4-notifyd.service not found". The user posting the question had the same result but that wasn't their solution. They had a fancy tablet plugged in or something.

One of the sign in options in my login screen is for Weston and I am able to login fine to that.

I'm pretty stumped here. I've started getting into loops while searching for an answer online. I feel like it's probably something on the XFCE side but I'm struggling to find out where to begin looking. Some users said to check .xsession-errors but apparently "Failed to fetch NET NUMBER OF DESKTOPS; assuming 0" is a normal message. I don't know about the four other messages but they all seem similar.

Any ideas? Even if it's rechecking something above. Maybe I missed something.

Update:

I downgraded my AMD GPU drivers through pacman and was able to get things working. Does anyone know why upgrading them might have caused my system to act this way? Would it be fine updating them in the future or do I need to make tweaks to my setup?

Yup, I think you just found your smoking gun. Maybe try feeding that long chain of text from the crashed process into your closest clanker that can also search the web and see what it says. I have a feeling something won't be aligned between the driver and the kernel. Like some package was pinned, but the kernel was updated over it or something.

I know how it hard it can be to chase down a problem like this, so I like to help a bit. I've had lots of issues dealing with Xorg over the years, especially when it comes to GPUs (AMD and nvidia).
