I am much disappoint. Looking it up, I find that Brazil has four songs: the national anthem, the anthem of the republic, the flag anthem, and the anthem of independence. None of them mention boobs, and one of them does mention blood.

You mean my unsourced internet meme was misleading, uninformed, or otherwise inaccurate? The idea of it! Next you'll tell me not to form an opinion on headlines alone!

That's not boobs. Every translation that I found had it as "bosom" in English, referring to the chest area. I mean, maybe some people have liberty in their tiddies, but that seems unusual.

[-] soupcon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 30 points 1 day ago

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/portuguese-english/seio has breast as the first translation.

Also, even in English, "bosom" is generally taken to be the polite way to say breast 99% of the time even if it /can/ mean the chest area. I think you're just being contrarian.

[-] Akasazh@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

'bosom' is unisex tho, men have chests too, but not boobies

[-] soupcon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

Ok, try complimenting a man on his bosom and see how he reacts.

[-] protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

because the common use of it nowadays means "breasts", the lyrics were written over a hundred years ago, that does not mean that that was the most common usage at the time or the intended one

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

They're not contrarian, bosom can refer to breasts but that's not the only definition. I'm pretty sure it's not even the primary definition for the majority of the word's existence.

I don't really want to link a bible site but take your pick and search for the word. 50+ references and it rarely meant boobs. It meant...the area of hugging. How could a man put his hands between his tits? Cradling a child is holding it in your bosom. A baby doesn't suck milk from bosoms.

Bosom meant the chest area even if it generally only used to mean breasts nowadays.

[-] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

How could a man put his hands between his tits?

Well, if he is very fat, has gynecomastia, or has not gotten top surgery yet, so technically...

[-] Tja@programming.dev 7 points 1 day ago

And the second is heart, which is much more fitting in the context.

[-] soupcon@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 1 day ago

You might read it that way, but it doesn't make the other reading wrong the way that user SwingingTheLamp was suggesting.

[-] deus@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

No, reading it in that way is wrong. The lyrics are talking about the land, the country. Not a person. In context it can only mean heart or core, not breast.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

I have never heard the word bosom refer to anything but boobs. Its like a polite term for titties.

[-] JayDee@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's used quite often to mean chest. It's a fill in for saying "breast", which is usually meaning "inside one's chest, near to their heart".

There's a quote attributed to Albert Einstein though I found no source to which is "Anger dwells only in the bosom of fools", which shows this application.

Shakespear also has Isabella say in Measure for Measure, act 2 scene 2 "Go to your bosom: knock there, and ask your heart what it doth know.", which seems most accurately to be describing the chest more vaguely.

I think that these two show how 'in [one's] bosom' often poetically means 'near [one's] heart", or 'close to [one's] chest'. The chest isn't the point of sentence, it's more a reference point for describing the actual subject location.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah it seems like it began meaning chest, became a polite way of saying boobs, and eventually the latter edged out the former. Mind you this is in English and the line in question is Portuguese so maybe arguing English semantics isn't helping us get close to the truth.

If anyone here speaks Portuguese I'd love to hear if that word has any of these implications in Portuguese.

[-] protogen420@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago

the word "seios" nowadays is largely equivelent to "breasts" but it seems like it meant chest more generally in past

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Makes sense, I guess bosom is an excellent translation then lol

[-] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The Battle Hymn of the Republic mentions Jesus's boobs, then.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I have liberty in my tits. They demand freedom!

[-] Mubelotix@jlai.lu 8 points 1 day ago

The translation is wrong. I don't know where that anthem comes but in french, sein means core. In its "sein" means at its core, deeply rooted

[-] inari@piefed.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

"Seio" in Portuguese means "breast" and is used to refer to boobs.

[-] Mubelotix@jlai.lu 9 points 1 day ago

Yes, seio can mean breast in Portuguese, but that's clearly not what it means in this context. It's being used figuratively to mean "within" or "at the heart of", just like sein in French.

A word having multiple meanings doesn't make them interchangeable. Translating seio as "boobs" here is simply a mistranslation, regardless of whether it makes a funny joke.

Is this a meme conversation? A meme point that youre trying to make?

[-] Olmai@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sein also means breast in french

[-] Mubelotix@jlai.lu 1 points 1 day ago
[-] Olmai@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

It's true though Source: Am french

[-] inari@piefed.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Right, but then the joke doesn't work :/

[-] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Thailand's national anthem is smuttier, then, since it talks about holding Thai people in boobs, not just an abstract concept like liberty!
