I would love to get one but to retrofit my house would cost about $20,000 which I currently don't have laying around with me.

My PV system provides an immediate and on going benefit which is why I could finance part of that. Unfortunately a heat pump is only useful for me about 8 months a year and will never "pay for itself"

My solar PV system was one the reasons I went ahead and ripped out the gas furnace and put in a cold climate heat pump. No amount of solar generation lowered the gas bill, but with the heat pump that is yet another bill that is paid for largely by the panels on the roof. The continued rising costs of gas was another incentive to remove the low efficiency contractor grade gas furnace. In the USA we were also able to take advantage of the tax credit to pay for part of the heat pump installation before trump did away with the credit.

Can I ask what fuel you're using to heat your house now? Also do you have AC for cooling in your house already?

They installed a heat pump. It uses electricity.

They said they didn't, but want to.

Heat pumps are the most efficient way to heat or cool a house as well as year round hot water heating. Most people find it pays back within a few years especially if they have solar.

They are very efficient indeed! But we have the windows open for 75% of the year, closed for 10%, and only turn the HVAC on the the remaining 15%. It unfortunately does not pencil out for me. However, when my existing system kicks the bucket, you bet your ass I'm going all electric!

Don’t forget the hot water. A big drain on electricity. Heat pumps are really cost effective for that, only beaten by solar collectors (if you have the roof space).
