Even considering rhetorical goals and context, without "I particularly dislike this guy", it's an enormous leap to twist those words that way.

Stop blaming the pandas.

So why did he include that part? No particular reason? Was he just making an unrelated remark about some of his friends? Accidentally included that bit but it was intended for a different email?

The simplest explanation is "similar to all the other times he's made back handed remarks or direct statements criticizing the intellect of who he was speaking to, he was criticizing the intellect of who he was speaking to".

This is an odd hill to die on. Linus is famously callous and rude in the Linux mailing list so to declare that this time he was just making a completely off-handed and unrelated remark about his bois is a difficult position to defend.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
