I grew up with parents who loved to cook and grow their own vegetables - I was always cooking with them. When I moved into an engineering dormitory, I was shocked to learn that absolutely no ~20 y/o around me knew how to cook. Seeing a picture of this plate brought me back - everybody made crap like this.

Also, once I saw a dude trying to boil a whole cheese (his parents were mega-wealthy, and he had never cooked once in his life).

Elaborate on boiling a "whole cheese" please

[-] Muffi@programming.dev 6 points 5 days ago

I don't eat cheese myself, so I can't say specifically which one. I came into the common kitchen one day, and he was just boiling a big chunky slice (like from a cheese wheel). His reason was that he thought it would 'soften it up'.

He was a great engineer but an incredibly odd fellow. His entire room was also just hip-height stacks of old tech, laptops, books and boardgames, with only a shallow walking path between his bed, desk and bathroom.

with only a shallow walking path between his bed, desk and bathroom.

The essentials.

Honestly, thats kinda sound logic. Cheese melt but would mix with water and water would also provide very uniform heating. As an engineer, I would for sure try it out as a possible solution.

I've never even imagined boiling cheese before. The closest I've come is throwing parmesan rinds into a tomato sauce, but you take the rinds out before eating it.

Yeah I don't trust anyone that doesn't eat cheese (i'm guessing any dairy?). You should have that chECKED OUT.

I am Danish and have a hatred for how the meat and dairy industry has ruined my country and its farmland. So more of a political choice, that was handed down to me by my hippie grandparents.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Would you make exceptions for, say, meat/dairy from local farms? I'm with you about the industries, and I try to supplement with locally farmed stuff as often as possible, but I'm also weak of constitution.

[-] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 days ago

They are too expensive to have on a regular occasion.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Agree, hence my weakness unfortunately. But I certainly try.

[-] Muffi@programming.dev 1 points 5 days ago

Sure would! But the few times I did try, it fucked with my stomach. Meat is especially rough if your stomach bacteria is not used to it. I don't consider myself vegan, I just don't buy dairy products.

[-] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

I'm lactose intolerant and even I eat cheese.

[-] Leather@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

"Boil a whole cheese"!!?? To what end? Like a craft single, a 1 lb block of sharp Tillamook cheddar, a 20 kg wheel of parm?

To what end?

Triggering the end times.

Same here, I grew up around a farm so I'm not like a great chef, but I know how to put a meal together. One time I saw someone attempt to make onion soup by just boiling an onion in a pot.

I have a theory that they only see cooking in video games, where you throw the ingredients into a cauldron or whatever and the meal comes out so they think that's how it works lol.

My parents were proto-hippies (went to college in the '50s) who listened to The Kingston Trio and baked their own bread and such. We almost never ate out or ate packaged food. One year I went to summer camp and for breakfast they made real stuff like eggs and pancakes and bacon but also had those little boxes of sugary cereals on the tables. I pigged out on the cereal while everybody else ate the real food, since their parents never ever made shit like that for them.
