2024 Kia EV6, stock head unit.

Edit with some quick notes because I didn't realize this blew up:

This is NOT yet usable as a replacement to stock. Working:

  • Boots! (32 bit only because stock is 32bit, so no AAOS)
  • Display
  • Touch
  • WiFi
  • Maybe BT
  • Maybe Modem (not gonna test that)
  • GPS (uses translation daemon)
  • Climate/controls/sensors/some energy stats - as much as MICOM provides anyway (uses translation daemon)
  • GPU
  • VPU (really need to test more)

Not working yet:

  • Audio/amp control
  • Power sequencing like when to turn off display, wake/sleep etc
  • Any kind of head unit experience (this will come later, I'll try AGL first, and if I can get 64 bit then I'll try AAOS)

Use NEMESIS to get root on Android: https://github.com/xwtk/hmg_nemesis

Blog post that has a small section on this: https://w-floyd.com/2026/10/notes-on-llms-part-01/#2024-kia-ev6-head-unit I'll post more there as I find the time. I am using LLMs for a lot of the heavy lifting as I try things out (never to write my blog). I link to my GitHub repos there, where this work is being actively pushed.

I only bought this car a week ago.

Don't be an idiot and actually reflash your unit if you try this - I am using kexec to boot from an image from the USB, so this is completely nondestructive (NEMESIS is what actually is installed to the system).

What an ironically meh comment. Did you work on that all night?

[-] 3abas@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Hardly, I spent all night trying to get doom running on my Ryzen 9 + 5090, I'm not as cool as you.

Why are people just being assholes? I thought we were talking about computers?

So which is it:

Am I a prick because I said that they loaded Linux onto a car's computer and they installed Doom, which is impractical, but certainly a cool feat to get Linux on there.

But Doom? You can't shoot imps while you are driving.

You're rocking a 5090? You doing video work? Mining?

No, you were a prick because you minimized what they accomplished and repeatedly called it meh while bragging about what you could have done. You were an asshole.

They didn't just get doom running, that was for fun. They listed what they got running and linked to their blog for updates.

No, I said was asking why the hell they would install Doom. That's why I was being a prick. Look through my comments: you will see me talk up the achievements repeatedly.

But of all things to install on it? Doom. Not an anti-flock GPS app, or VLC. Nope, Doom. That's what I mocked.

I don't need to look at your other comments that came after, this is the context of you being downvoted and asking people why they're being assholes to you, it's because you were an asshole.

You made an mp3 player from scratch? What you think that makes you cool?

I designed and built a fully functional smartphone from scratch. Designed the multilayer motherboard, fabricated my own silicon, developed a custom ARM-compatible processor, wrote the bootloader, ported the Linux kernel, implemented the hardware drivers, designed the cellular modem and RF circuitry, built the touchscreen from raw materials, wrote my own operating system, and hand carved the enclosure. Then I realized I didn't want to depend on cellular providers, so I designed, built, and launched my own telecommunications satellite constellation, constructed a ground station, and implemented a proprietary global communications protocol. Naturally, I also built my own semiconductor fabrication facility because outsourcing the chips felt like cheating. The phone works pretty well, although I'm still debugging Bluetooth.

Mp3 player, that's so meh.

It isn't like it makes me cool. I was talking about how I enjoy making shit.

And I don't fucking care about downvotes. I can't cash in internet points. God, the voting system which Reddit and Digg used was supposed to be for relevancy, not about if you agreed or not.

I don't know you, and outside of the respect of general life, I don't give a fuck what some random person on the internet thinks of me. In fact, I don't want you to know me.

However, if you met me, you would get a solid realization that text is a terrible form of communication.

You cannot see the tone of my voice. You cannot hear the look on my face. You cannot feel my energy without a handshake.

I don't like toxicity over the fact that all I said was it isn't practical to install Doom on your car.

But you can hate me all you want. Don't know why you specifically just want to rage on the internet as if this means a single thing to your life.

The newspaper will come out after I am dead and I will not be mentioned.

We have 8 billion people on this planet who want to judge me, so I won't bother with doing your "job".

But I think if you did know me, you might be kinder and recognize I am not an asshole.

I am a prick, and that is fair. Assholes get fucked. So... get fucked. I have to go to work.

And an mp3 player, where you start with a personally designed pcb, solder on the components, design the core logic, write the code, attach an LCD, and print an enclosure. Meh? You build one.

You're so meh, I bet you think this comment is about you. You're so meh! Don't you, don't you, dooon't you!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
