Welcome to the News community!
Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.
So ingredients you have to then put together yourself? Isn't that just "groceries?"
Instead of sending you a bunch of mint when the recipe needs 5 leaves, they send you 5 leaves. The idea is less waste.
The 5 leaves are wrapped in plastic and cost more than a bunch, so you're not "wasting" a bunch of mint you won't use, but you're wasting plastic and money.
It's for rich people with nothing to do.
I tried a couple of these companies when they first came out and they had offers through my credit card that made it very cheap. The recipes were alright, but it was fun to cook them with the kids as they didn't get bored with the prep work before we can actually cook, but they aren't cheap and they aren't less wasteful. I can eat left overs, I can't eat the extra plastic.
Yes, but shipped to you and with a recipe for you to follow.
Someone forgot to swap their account’s address when they moved, so I got a Hello Fresh box for free when I moved in.
The food inside is mid and the recipes are super basic. Soooooo much plastic waste too. Everything is wrapped individually and excessively.
The food was fine though (I ate it after the rightful owner didn’t show up for a week)
We started with them a week ago, in a country with a lot stronger workers' rights than the US.
We usually do weekly shopping and cook pretty much every meal at home. My goal was to reduce the cognitive load of meal planning for the week. Seems it costs about the same, and following new recipes it's a cognitive load, too.
At least we've been eating more varied.
I see some value for people who don't know how to cook. You pick a recipe that sounds good, they send you all you need, (With no extra, so no worrying about what to do with the left over that will properly end up going to waste) and a guide on how to cook it.
I considered trying one of these services to find new recipes. Never ended up doing it, seem like a good choice seeing this.
I have been using meal kit services like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh for years. They offer multiple types of meals, from simple “microwave this box then eat the contents” to more refined meals that you make from scratch. The first category doesn’t make sense to me, then you could buy a frozen meal cheaper in the store. The latter category is definitely not for anyone who can’t cook. For example, today I made mashed potato, roasted carrots, pork chops, with orange sauce. I use these services because I like spending 30-40 minutes in my kitchen, preparing a nicely plated, tasty, fresh meal instead of getting takeout or eating leftovers or frozen food. The value they provide is that you don’t need to go grocery shopping, and you don’t need to think about it or plan it other than taking 5 minutes to updating the meal selection every couple weeks.
In past years with crazy inflation in grocery prices, they have not been able to raise prices as much, so it’s not more expensive than shopping yourself. Unfortunately, they have been cutting costs by lowering the quality and quantity of ingredients, and, apparently, by exploiting their workers.
Hmm, yeah I suppose that does sound a tad to advanced for someone who truly doesn't know how to cook. I still think that if someone was trying to get better at cooking, this service sound like the most approachable way to go about it.
They publish their recipes: https://www.hellofresh.com/recipes
Personally, I'd just consider a cookbook, or a recipe blog.
