"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
Rules:
- Relevant posts only.
- No bigotry.
- This isn't a place to talk about the cons and (supposed) pros of AI for different use cases. This is /c/fuck_ai .
- Especially no AI advocacy.
- Don't make any posts that are just AI content with no context unless the point of your post is obvious from content. (Don't just post slop advertisements or slop political cartoons. At least make your point about it clear so we know you aren't just trolling.)
- Venting is part of the purpose of this community, but don't aim frustration or accusations at other users.
- These rules are a living document that may change in the future.

books cost an initial investment and returns on that investment with an unlimited amount based on the longevity of the book.
data centers have a high initial investment with a similar ROI but lack the longevity and includes expensive long term maintenance.
books are a better investment, and I'm saying that as someone who works in big tech.
Digital information can be copied indefinitely. Every copy can be perfect, no degradation. It can be searched, have embedded cross-references and sent around the world in seconds. Books suck as a medium in comparison, and that's just for text.
true, but books can be printed indefinitely too.
Untrue. data degradation is a real thing and can result in complete data loss or corruption. even if you store the data in the best case scenario it's not a matter of if, but when.
Books similarly can be damaged but are often repairable unless completely destroyed.
We used to call that research when books were the primary source of knowledge. indices and glossaries still exist, you know?
data can be rewritten because it is stateless. this allows overbearing individuals to literally change how history is remembered.
can't do that with books. once printed, they stay printed forever.
books are a more favorable medium when you account for corruption, propaganda, and environmental impacts. even the paper they are printed on can be recycled, further reducing environmental impacts. can't say that about data.
don't be mad, thank a book you can even read this.
