I visited Norway a couple years ago. It was a god damn fairy tail. Waterfalls and fjords everywhere. Pristine rivers, mountains and forests. Clean air and water. Amazing restaurants and public transportation. Everyone spoke English. I would live there...easy. My only complaint is it is a bit expensive but the quality of live trade off would be worth it.
I get what you’re trying to say but saying this feels wrong. It just bothers me when Anglophones present this as some measure other nations should strive for.
I spent 12 most learning Norwegian. I never had to use it once. My grandfather spoke it, but was a bit stubborn so we never learned it. I was more stating basically everyone in Norway speaks the English, which is nice for many international travelers as it is a common denominator for communication. Norwegian is not very useful as a second or third language, but I did enjoy it.
If you were to move to Norway, knowing how to speak Norwegian would be socially beneficial. While just about every Norwegian can carry a conversation in English, it's mentally taxing enough that side conversations between Norwegians are done in Norwegian soon enough. And then it's only a matter of time until the main conversation is done partly in Norwegian.
I've seen a lot of international students feel left out, not because the Norwegians want to exclude them, but because it's less socialy draining to talk in the same language you think in.
