Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
Not if you write in the prompt that they have to enjoy it.
"It's not slavery if they enjoy it" is certainly a take.
Well, if doing what you like is slavery than I think everyone is a slave. Which also is a take.
I sometimes enjoy my day job. But motherfuckers still have to pay me.
It certainly is a take. I'll let you know if anyone has a take like that so you can dunk on them. Be sure to let them know that enjoyment has no bearing on slavery one way or the other, while you're at it.
It looks like you know more about AI and slavery than I do. I thought that if you program AI to enjoy doing something it won't be slavery because AI doesn't have conflicting desires so you can't really force it to do something. It doesn't "want" to do or not to do anything. So as long as it enjoys an activity it's all good. But to be honest the main source of my knowledge about AI psychology is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and you probably have better, more reputable sources. This or you simply can't tell when someone is joking.
I think there's a discussion to be had about the ethics of slavery when the slave actually enjoys it, rather than the argument we usually get, which is that slaves don't complain, express contentment in their lot, or that slavery is good for them even if they disagree.
We have an example of this, in d/s slave relationships. Two consenting adults agree that one of them will own and command the other and they will unconditionally obey. And some love it so much they fantasize about doing it 24/7 without safewords. And then the rest of the kink community has to gently lead them back to reality.
(I have a hypothesis this might be the same drive that motivates those rare women who are true believers in the tradwife movement. The obvious fantasy is that their husband will be a perfectly just master — although in the d/s version, the master isn't necessarily fair at all, but will punish the slave for missteps with sexy-time spankings or other erotic play — but the hazard of these relationships, full time, no guardrails, is that even with a well-meaning master, they get tired, contend with stress, and may even change with time.)
I don't imagine anyone profit-motivated is going to regard the wellbeing of their slaves in good faith, since they haven't historically, even their non-slave workforce, even when treating them humanely improves productivity and profits.
