It's good that we're giving animals hints about how to develop technology but you'd think we'd start by handing out matches or something 🤷‍♀️

Squirrels will eventually enslave snails for their own 0.01 Hz electrical grid.

The wheel must turn

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 7 points 12 hours ago

At least it's something other than boiling water.

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 6 points 11 hours ago

The electricity will be used to boil water.

[-] Metz@lemmy.world 38 points 23 hours ago

That is how you get pyromaniac slugs.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 16 points 22 hours ago

I just looked it up and your average slug lives for about six years, so even at slug speed that's quite a lot of damage that slug could do.

[-] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 11 points 16 hours ago

That is way longer than I expected a slug to live… I would have though less than month but I never claimed to be a slugologist

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 11 points 15 hours ago

Most animals live longer than seems reasonable. There a spider that lives in the corner of my garden shed and it still there after five years.

[-] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 2 points 5 hours ago

Some tarantula species can live up to +20 years old, I have read even claims of +30.

Also big parrots might be able to live up to +80, though the exact numbers are unconfirmed for parrots, as they are living longer and longer in captivity, as our knowledge on how to keep them well gets better and better.

[-] kazerniel@quokk.au 2 points 7 hours ago

Otoh small songbirds seldom live beyond 3 years in the wild :(

[-] mobyduck648@lemmy.world 8 points 12 hours ago

Herring gulls in extreme cases can live into their 30s. There's probably a haggard old gull somewhere which remembers the '90s.

[-] Natanael@infosec.pub 4 points 11 hours ago

No gulls remember the 90's, they barely remember yesterday

[-] mobyduck648@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

Not necessarily true, they're clever birds and can certainly hold grudges.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 3 points 12 hours ago

TERRIFIC.

RADIANT.

HUMBLE.

[-] albbi@piefed.ca 7 points 20 hours ago

I'd prefer a cytomantic slug, thank you very much. DOOMSLUG!!

It’s a made-up word from a Brandon Sanderson young adult novel that includes magic-enabling slug familiars.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 12 hours ago

magic-enabling slug familiars

I can't decide whether that would be a cute or a disgusting description of a flaccid penis. Specifically that of one of the Puppetry of the Penis guys 😁

[-] albbi@piefed.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

I think it's pretty cute.

[-] stormdelay@sh.itjust.works 7 points 17 hours ago

By etymology that would mean cellular magic, make of that what you will

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 16 hours ago
[-] stormdelay@sh.itjust.works 7 points 15 hours ago

Yes, it's the adjective form of -mancy, so cytomancy would be cell/cellular magic, and a cytomantic slug is a slug with a cellular magic property of some kind. Think of necromancy/necromantic.
