Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s former opponent in the U.S. Senate primary, Haley Stevens, stunned party officials Sunday by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers after Democratic tensions boiled over days before the election that could determine the balance of power on Capitol Hill.

Stevens endorsed Rogers after attending a Detroit church service with him. The remarkable show of support for Donald Trump’s backed candidate in the tightly contested race comes after she was uninvited to a joint event the same day with El-Sayed, who defeated the congresswoman by a slim margin in the August primary.

“Our Democratic nominee for Senate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens said video announcing the endorsement. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

Already kicked out of the party.

This is the chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.

The video on that article had a great response from El-Sayed at the end, when the press was asking about his response to questions about Stevens and if he knew about her endorsement ahead of time. He basically said he understands that getting answers like that it what drives clicks but ultimately it doesn't matter at all, and that he wished the press would focus on issues the local electorate cares about like prices and wages.

I would like to think even more would have resigned if we had universal Healthcare

transphobe staffers unresigned yet…

Good chance most of the grunts don't have a choice. It's either keep the job for a couple months while actively searching for something new, or go without food or health insurance. I don't envy them.

This should be top. Already rightfully expelled.

All the people bellyaching at the top should take note- blue no matter who and proven.

[-] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 24 points 2 days ago

I don't know that I've personally been bellyaching about the top, but as someone who refuses to donate to the Dem party and only donates to candidates directly, this is really great to see. I've been disappointed in the past by the party's behavior, and this is the kind of behavior I need to see in order to be brought back into the fold.

[-] Enekk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I'm sure you realize this, but when you directly donate to a Democrat or Republican candidate, they are required to turn around and donate portions of that to their party. The requirements are so great that politicians basically have to become 24x7 fundraisers or else they are punished by the party.

People focus on lobbyists and PACs as dumping money into politics, but a large part of the demand for that money is being generated by the idiot parties themselves.

[-] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago

I'm aware that leftover funds often (not always) get donated to the party, but do you have any source for the mandate for portions of donated funds?

[-] Enekk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I do in fact! Oh, and don't think it is just Congress. I don't have a source beyond "something I heard on NPR one time", but pretty much every level has to raise money in order to get the full support of their party.

blue no matter who and proven.

This seems like a stark rebuke of the above. The national party has been absolutely toxic towards El-Sayud since he filled to run.

Vote Who Chuck Schumer Tells You Too, is more like it

[-] Feathercrown@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Finally the dems actually kick people out for some of this shit

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

shes was too blatant even for schumer or hakeem, she was suppose to use the double speak, say one thing, and do the opposite behind the scenes.

[-] sudo@programming.dev 6 points 2 days ago

What are the actual consequences of this though? Michigan is an open primary state. Democratic party membership is meaningless.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago

she wont get support, possibly money from the dems, not like tha tmatters, since she got aipac money.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Can he do that? Like he has that power? I'm glad if he does of course, I'm just kind of surprised that's within his power to just declare.

[-] waltersf@bookwyr.me 1 points 2 days ago

weird they can’t do the same for transphobes in DNC
