Not really. People who need to drive still drive. Trucks, trains, and ships continue hauling freight. Navies continue their patrols. Planes still transport people and goods.

It's just more expensive.

Not true. The prices are higher because less fuel is available. You can't burn what ain't there.

Plus, the increased fuel prices mean alternatives become more attractive. This stimulates investments into these alternatives. Hence the price increase speeds up the transition to better technologies. This is why an emmision tax could work.

They will eventually not be able to pay.

[-] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Sure, but they can at the moment.

[-] jaykrown@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

All the bankrupt trucking companies couldn't, there will be more.

[-] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

All those bankrupt companies were small operations or owner/operators who were already struggling. The big companies are doing fine.

Indeed, thanks for confirming that we're in a K shaped recession.

[-] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah, but that's been going on since the 70s.

[-] jaykrown@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Nope, the 1990s were a recovery period, and now we're in the late stage acceleration.

One decade out of 5.

Thats just plain wrong.. there is a LOT you can do to influence fuel consumption.

Driving style, vehicle type and also distance traveled.

Yes.. some things will take more time than others but simply claiming my F500 is the end of my efforts is plain wrong

Also.. Transport costs are really low if you actually look at it and compared to what a product costs.. and yes I do a lot of internal shipping

Most of his point was about oil uses other than private vehicles. Discussions always revolve around personal use, because that's where we understand oil, but there's a hella lot more going on.

For example, I live next to a Navy base where they train helicopter pilots. They're going to fly those machines regardless.

Sure, but To replace that F350 you need credit and the income to cover the payments. Most people can't afford another payment, especially if their car is already paid off. Trade-in value is pathetic these days when dealerships will offer you $1,500 on a trade-in worth $5,000.

[-] Schemen110676@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 days ago

It doesn't need to be right now.. but it will influence the choice for the next car.

My point stands. As long as big ass trucks are bought gas isn't too expensive

[-] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Depending on what you do for a living you may need that big ass truck.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This is lemmy where every time we see a big ass truck we assume the driver is an asshole who doesn't need it. Working Outdoor Lawn and Garden at Lowe's cured me of that attitude.

Funny enough, no one here would bitch about my beat up 2004 F150, despite the fact that my gas mileage is worse than every pavement princess out there.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
