I will either starve or use AI
(lemmy.zip)
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Yep, pretty much nailed it. I've been a developer for nearly 15 years now and I haven't enjoyed the introduction of AI into the work flow. It's nice for some things, but my company seems to be pushing toward AI doing all the coding and the "developers" just being reviewers. No on ehas ever told me they like reviewing code. People enjoy the coding part and they want to use AI to take that away.
I've wondered what I'll do if I get to a point where I no longer enjoy my job. Because my company isn't unique in its use of AI. It's going to be every software company.
Seems like a waste of human talent. Surely it would be better to have the humans do the coding and the a.i. review it for bugs. I'm not a tech person, nor a greedy executive, but that would make more sense to me.
Well, we kinda use it for both. We still have a human review it but we also have the AI review it.
It you want logic in decisions that management makes, I can't help you. I purposefully stayed off that path because I knew I wouldn't like it. I don't want to manage people.
During COVID we worked from home for years. Then they forced us back into the office. It's only 2 days a week, but still. Our entire office complained about it but we were just given some bullshit about interacting with coworkers, specifically management. Nevermind that the senior management doesn't even work in our building. Ohh, and like half our team doesn't even work in the same state. THEY ENETERED A NEW LEASE AT A NEW BUILDING TO IMPLEMENT THIS. Surely not paying for office space would save money. Ohh, and it gets even better. We used to have company outings, but they got rid of those after COVID too. Yay.
That sounds awful. You have my sympathy. I too never want to go anywhere near being a manager. Life's pretty peaceful at the bottom.
I hear you. I work in the public service. We also have to deal with the whims of politicians, where there's the potential for fairly drastic changes every three years or so.
I try to take a fairly sanguine view of it though. I do the job they ask me to, and go home with a clear conscience, no matter how odd the decisions may seem to me.
