Everyday, because I live here
My sympathies. As an escapee who is forced to return for regular family obligations I know your pain.
Forced? Sounds a bit dramatic.
Formative years spent in Kansas. Left when I saw an opportunity. Hope you get out and move to a better place.
That said, Kansas also voted better this time around. Doesn't mean I wanna go back.
There are much worse places than Ohio, and it's getting better. The constant hate and concern trolling is just so annoying at this point because it shows people have no idea what it's actually like here.
Ohio is just like every other state. The cities are blue, the rural areas are red. The main difference is that both the rural and urban areas hold roughly equal political weight. Unfortunately the rural areas have been able to turn out more voters than the cities the past few elections. This one, the cities were able to turn out more. Obviously we hope that continues and things continue to improve here, but the hyperbole of treating Ohio like it's some war-torn hellhole isn't helpful.
I don't think anyone thinks it's a war-torn hellhole, but it's a Republican state, very, very red, and has been for at least the past 20 years. Every single day, I still hear people falling all over themselves to kiss Trump's ass. These people are mentally retarded and they genuinely believe this bullshit.
There are MAGA cult members in every state. And the rural areas are red, just like every other state with rural areas. I don't think it's fair to call it a very, very red state for the past 20 years though. Sherrod Brown has been one of our senators for nearly that whole time. We voted to enshrine women's reproductive rights in our Constitution in that time. We voted to legalize marijuana in that time. If you just look at presidential elections, then yeah I guess you could reach that conclusion, but you'd be ignoring a ton of other really important data points to get there.
It's also not fair to call it red now. We have a Democrat governor, 5 of the 8 Congress seats this cycle were won by Democrats, and a Republican Senate seat was taken back by a Democrat. At most you could call the state purple, but it's leaning more blue than red.
Anyways, yeah I was using hyperbole when I said people treat it like a war torn hellhole. To put it more accurately, people treat Ohio like it's some backwards red state full of rednecks when that truly just is not the case. It's just like any other state where the rural areas are red and the cities are blue. Telling people "thoughts and prayers, I hope you're able to escape" is ignorant of reality, and wholly unhelpful.
I never said that.
I know about the abortion amendment. It shocked me that it passed. We also legalized marijuana and the legislature immediately proceeded to fuck with it.
Maybe it's not red, but a very reddish purple. Lol.
I have lived in one of the large cities and it may be bluer than the surrounding area, but it's still fairly conservative imo. I'm in a rural area now and am surrounded by Trumpards. Every single small business is also owned by a Trumptard. I have seen "Trump 2028" signs... I cannot be open about my political or religious beliefs.
Jesus Christ dude I'm summarizing the sentiment expressed by other people in the thread and in general lmao. Am I not allowed to use summary as a literary device on Lemmy these days?
This is not unique to Ohio. (I understand you personally haven't claimed this is unique to Ohio, but the overall general sentiment about Ohio is that this is unique to Ohio, or especially bad in Ohio compared to other states. I'm merely pushing back against that sentiment, and pointing out that this attitude is a feature of basically all rural areas, and singling out Ohio on this is unhelpful. Hope this is clear.)
