I'm trying to migrate off of Reddit completely but there are a few communities that still don't exist in the fediverse. Communities for the APS and Australian Unions being a couple of them.
Thing is, theres not heaps of people adding posts regularly on AZ, and those that are, are stretched pretty thin already. Would you be able to support the community with a base line of activity? Because it might be made and be just another orphaned community, if no-one posts there.
Would you also be a moderator if asked by Nath/Lodion?
I guess the flip side is that there is no community for it anywhere on the fediverse at the moment and most people aren't going to take the initiative to create one. So you kinda don't know until we try.
If you aren't in the public service you might not realise how big the subreddit is and the potential for a Lemmy community. I'm happy to take the L and fold it if it doesn't take off.
And yeah happy to moderate. I am an active union delegate in the APS and I think healthy and productive discussion of the APS is one of the best ways to ensure it remains accountable and employee conditions are preserved.
I'm not saying don't do it, please don't get me wrong. New and interesting communities are good.
I'm saying the community proposed needs a 'champion', or even a team of people willing to consistently post content and be involved in the community. The Australian fediverse, in particular Lemmy, the source of most community visitors is orders of magnitude smaller than reddit.
And IKT's right, it could be only a single user keeping the community going, but thats okay if its fun to do.
This post from Evan Prodromou is probably good inspiration,
Also, post to your local city sub, thats a good way to help boost the general activity and interest here on AZ. I go for indie media where I can find it, otherwise AZ can sometimes feel like a Guardian/ABC repost site.

Thanks for the tips!
I know what you mean and it will of course be an uphill battle but I want to believe in Lemmy and cut one of my last ties to centralised social media.
Do it, lets build this alternative place together. Can't wait for the inaugural post.
that's the only thing, if you're willing to have a community that looks mostly like this:

For potentially years until reddit collapses (maybe never based on how long facebook has hung around like a bad smell) then yeah go for it
