ROME (AP) — Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni’s Cabinet on Friday approved her proposal to make the office of the prime minister directly elected by voters in a bid to end the country’s chronic ailment of short-lived, unstable governments.

Changing Italy’s Constitution would allow voters to elect a premier who would serve five years — to coincide with Parliament’s full term.

Short lived governements are a feature, not a bug. By removing power from the prime minister italians tried to avoi having issues like in the 1930's with strong leaders getting too much of it.

Yet, it is the majority of the citizens who decide (not those who understand better the Constitutional framework and the underlying values), so if the time has come to change the constitution, they will take the opportunity to do it.
