Are there a lot of people like this nowadays? I don't know any, maybe I'm lucky.

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 11 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Quite a bit. Those that vote against their own interests and don't want the rich to be taxed, for example.

Do you personally know a lot of people like this? Like relatives?

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 2 points 11 months ago

Yeah, luckily I'm not in contact with those people that often anymore.

These people are not in my social bubble, but I come from a poor family, so they were in my social bubble once upon a time.

What reason is there to tax the rich more than we currently do? Why do they owe the government more money than they are currently being taxed for?

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The reason is that they simply avoid paying most of the taxes they should.

[–] HopFlop@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Im all for fixing that instead of just increasing the amount of taxes (which will then just hit the honest ones and not thr ones who are already evading taxes)

[–] rikudou@lemmings.world 1 points 11 months ago

In an ideal world I agree with you. But we don't live there. So we have to tax them more and then they'll evade more, then we tax again and so on.

You may live in a more educated social bubble. I recommend joining some poor district or countryside bar or sports club and listen to political opinions to get an idea.

Maybe a more educated bubble, but lately it's just a really small bubble, that's why I ask. I wonder how much media influences our perception of how common different views are.

[–] oce@jlai.lu 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think reputable media tend to favor the opinion of the intellectual elite because it is written by it.

Who are "intellectual elite"? Like what makes someone fit in that category?

[–] oce@jlai.lu 1 points 11 months ago

University diplomas, intellectual jobs, often child of such person so they have been exposed to intellectual culture from childhood.

I have some in-law relatives (unemployed) that are not only like this but also live of welfare and Medicaid while being huge Trumper republicans who think all democrats are just socialist out to get their money.
