In no way was it trying to mimic games like devil may cry, 90% of the focus was on the narrative & psychological horror. If you were looking for more engaging gameplay that's fine obviously, but I think your expectations for what this game was got misled somewhere.
I guess my reservation for such a decision is that I’ve seen many games with main focus on story but also great fighting. Like the original god of war or prince of Persia trilogies. But that’s an unfair comparisons given those are really, really good games.
I do agree I'd love to see better combat. It seems like the budget they had for the game they wanted to produce just necessitated making concessions somewhere. The environments, motion capture, voice acting, visuals are all great, and the combat just moves the game along without it becoming a walking simulator I suppose.
