Chuck Varga passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026 after a ten-year battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He was 68.

He was a co-founder of Slave Pit Productions and of the band Gwar, playing a supporting character called 'The Sexicutioner' who generally battled things in the background while the band has to play the song. He would sometimes do other roles when the band was in a pinch even doing monster roles such as 'Gorgor'. He had a few songs that were his songs to sing (Ragnarok, Sexicutioner), his work was primarily behind the scenes.

He helped in much of the early costume, prop and set design having to do it all in order to do it as they artistically envisioned it. He helped in much of the bands early lore and story, the mythos of Gwar the aliens. He totally did his part in making Gwar the spectacular experience that it is. If you've never seen a Gwar show, you are really missing out on a unique experience.

Heres a really nice interview with the real Chuck Varga about Chuck Varga.

Buckethead - Pike 097 - Passageways [Mellow/Rock Instrumental]

A twenty-nine minute and five track pike that starts off very mellow, building progressively into a more light rock sound.

This is one of those non-heavy pikes that just gets to me. A bit minimalist to start, and very sad throughout. Hauntingly beautiful while being somber and lonely.

Is kind of how I feel on this brisk autumn morning.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Interview with James Talarico

The interview with the democratic candidate for Texas Senate that allegedly made the FCC's ass so sore they threatened to nuke Jimmy Kimmel from orbit so he showed it on youtube or some shit.

A pretty shit interview really. It was essentially mud slinging and bell ringing and clever ways to capitalize on the mudslinging. There was zero political content.

I'm on the fence as to whether or not this is just a new 'studio wrestling' version of politics. Some bizarre idiocracy-esque drama scripted for primetime TV to make you think they haven't already picked the winner.

We'd all be better off if Gravy had been a better shot.

Mighty Pursuit Interview With Vinney Tolman - 107 Minute Near-Death Experience

This is a pretty long and very detailed video interview from Mighty Pursuit with interviewee and near-death experience survivor Vinney Tolman. A well done interview and also a truly remarkable story.

I was initially dismayed by it's long runtime, just because it hard to give up two hours these days, but now that I've finished it, I'm wishing it would have been three hours.

spoilerVinney was twenty-five when he and a friend make an honest mistake. He experiences his own death in a public bathroom at Dairy Queen in Utah.

This is followed by a confusing, lucid state outside of his own body where he experiences the emergency response for his friend followed by a second response later for himself. A response where he is declared 'dead on arrival' and put into a body bag.

He then experiences his own reanimation in the ambulance when a mysterious voice causes a 'Rookie Mistake' that brings him back to life resulting in the sudden realization that he has been watching the fallout from his own death and from that, a new understanding that triggers a life review.

While he is watching his body go through seizures at the hospital, he meets an unknown being in white that calls himself a 'guide'. The guide assists Vinney in changing his vibration so that he can transport to a beautiful, timeless, and massive place that the guide refers to as 'home', a somehow familiar place where even the grass emits an extreme love for him.

Ultimately, he is informed by the guide that he is to be returned to his body because it is 'worth it'. So it was that he found himself waking up in a hospital after being braindead and coma-induced and machine assisted for three days.

He goes on to detail the struggle of having 'Home' taken away, the shock of remembering the after-death experience, the coping of the events and moving forward after these experiences.

Harry Caray and Gloria Steinhem

I always think of this clip when I hear the name Gloria Steinhem. It goes to show how the odds were always against this truly wonderful and remarkable lady who did good things for the human race.

Buckethead - Pike 297 - Fork [Rock Instrumental]

A sonically unique nine-track hard rock pike with a thirty minute runtime. His sound is very mainstream on this pike, even a little akin to Buckcherry or even ACDC at times. Heavy on the distortion. Simple but lively timings. Simple chords. Lots of sustain. Mainstream song structure.

It's definitely a step off his usual, but as a guy that enjoys Buckcherry, I say giddyup. Well worth checking out.

So i'm experiencing a sudden network issue with only Beehaw despite no major changes to my PC or network.

So I can go to beehaw.org, navigate to anywhere on it, but after 1 minute, the connection becomes unresponsive (connection was reset). This error will persist for about 2 hours or until I change my IP address. At that point, I can hit beehaw.org again, unfettered, but only for about 1 minute before the unresponsiveness kicks back in.

Am running windows 7 and brave browser under proton VPN, but it occurs with or without the VPN running. It only seems to occur with beehaw. I've not noticed any other site having navigational problems. I flushed the dns and rebooted both the PC (full shut down) and the wifi, but the error still occurs every time. The connection will be reset after 1 minute on a fresh IP.

Anyone smelt this fish before? Started about a month ago.

Biohazard - Urban Discipline (American Metal / Hardcore Punk)

Biohazard is a seething and hostile mix of heavy metal and hardcore punk. They have a very raw and blisteringly angry sound. This is their second album, and likely my favorite among them.

While it may not win any lyrical awards, the music is simply phenominal. Lots of energy from this CD will get you hopping. Track 02 'Punishment' is probably their best song (and one of the best times I've ever had in a mosh pit). And of track 09 'Loss', indeed, it burns inside to lose a friend.

I hope you enjoy.

Buckethead - Pike 151 - Fog Garden [Rock Instrumental]

A thirty-one-minute pike with four-tracks. It's mostly rock that gets heavier as it goes along.

The first track is experimental rock with high distortion guitar and an alternative percussion style. The second drops the distortion for a solo-style guitar.

The last two tracks get a bit heavier and feature a more mainstream sound with crazy solos. These two tracks were the pearl and they go by so quick.

Buckethead - Pike 235 - Oneiric Pool [Rock Instrumental]

A twenty-nine-minute, single-song in seven-tracks. It builds from a softer rock into a harder rock as it goes along.

I thought it to be a very enjoyable song despite it being lighter than I usually prefer. Very nice melody and arrangement. What it lacked in heavy it made up for with quality. There's a lot of emotion behind this piece and it comes through.

Buckethead - The Cellar Yawns [Rock/Metal Instrumental]

This is the title track (track four) from Pike 154 - The Cellar Yawns. A ten-minute ultra-aggressive, metal-laden masterpiece.

The rest of the pike was more of a soft to hard rock blend that I did not enjoy as much as this song. It has that 'The Boiling Pond (Pike 016)' angry sternness about it.

So, today is July 18, 2026. A storm just rolled through Pittsburgh. I got to actually watch it roll in tonight. It was pretty weak sauce as far as storms go. A couple wind gusts, some rain and that was about it.

But, there was an oddity about it. I noticed it maybe ten-minutes before the front hit. A low rumbling roar. Constant. Almost like the sound an airplane. In fact, when I was trying to figure out what I was hearing, I can practically see the airport, so I initially determined it had to be a jet from its persistence, but then there was no doppler effect.

Sometimes, I would see lightning, but it was all cloud to sky. Eventually, I heard a clap that was real close, close enough that I could discern its pitch from the din. Indeed, I was hearing an unending chorus of dozens of small thunderclaps, starting and stopping at their own accord, but layered together. The front passed through fifteen-minutes ago, and the roar is still going on right now.

I like watching storms come in, and I have watched a few a year for many decades, but I've not ever heard that. Kind of weird. Anyone know if there is a name for that?

There was a company that offered them for $12.00 back in the late 90's. Sony shut them down before anyone I knew could even get one.

[-] jay2@beehaw.org 16 points 2 years ago

HP was great in the 90's. They made quality stuff back then. My HP4MV's were like a tank. They built a great name for themselves legitimately. That all changed in 2000 when that dingbat took over as CEO. Everything they made became ultra cheap. When I'm out shopping, I've been known to approach random strangers that I observe looking to buy a printer just to tell them how bad HP is.

I personally stopped using them in 2002 after a brand new HP-5610 multifunction doc center cockblocked itself from windows 98 because I plugged in the usb data cable that connects the computer and printer without installing their bloaty software FIRST. It was a long night reinstalling the OS I had just reinstalled the week prior. Their helpdesk was so infuriatingly dumb and unhelpful I made it a goal to steer anyone away from them that I can.

The Brother laserjet I purchased as a replacement in 2007-ish is still going strong as well. I've never even serviced it (other than replacing toner and paper). Admittedly, it's getting tired after 18 years.

You do not need to support a company that treats its customers as badly as HP does, and never support anyone or anything that thinks you deserve to stand there like an idiot for 15 minutes before they can do their job for you. That, kids, is called neglectful and disrespectful.

You know, I left Reddit because I didn't like what was going on. Banning US presidential election posts to a political forum makes me not like what's going on. What's next on the ban list?

Having used autocad for nearly 40 years, I will say they stick it to their customers pretty fiercely. I still use 2010 with 3rd party software to get it to run on win10 at home. I do a lot of solid models and assemblies as well as technical 2D drawings and renderings.

FreeCAD is impressive, but it lacks an easy to use interface. NanoCAD and LibreCAD are not open source but are free and are both better 2D alternatives.

Edit: LibreCAD is open source.

I built a PC for my little sister in 2007. She was starting college and didn't have a computer. It totaled 2805 and some change, custom built through Antares Digital (When you know, you Lili). These were all top of the line components (Asus M2N32-WS PRO, Amd athlon64 X2 AM2 5200, Corsair Memory). Not a cheapy system in its day.

Three nights before I was to deliver it to her, I completed all of the setup, had all the software ready to go, even setting up a custom theme for her (We were both metalheads). My folks said that she would need a printer/fax/copy/scanner as well, so last minute, I ended up buying an HP 5610 at target for 192 dollars.

The HP instructions didn't say that if you connected the cable between the printer and the PC before you had installed the drivers, the printer would not mount as a device. In fact, it would never connect to that PC ever again. Apparently, it ruined the registry until you reformatted and reinstalled the OS.

To be fair, the manual did say to install the drivers first, then the cable, but this was not the norm back then and they didn't really emphasize it in any way, nor did it mention that you were about to be FITA big time. Had to scramble to completely reformat the drive, reinstall all the software... Essentially, starting over from a blank slate and getting done in 2 days for delivery to her dorm on move in day. It did connect second time around.

I wrote them an angry letter regarding the poor deployment, but of course I never heard back from them. Never bought another HP for myself or anyone else ever again. I go out of my way to encourage people to not buy anything from HP. If I happen to be somewhere and see someone looking at an HP printer, I'll just approach them, introduce myself, and tell them my story to discourage them from buying it.

I think that 'Star Trek - The Next Generation' covered this very dilemma with (S2E18) Up The Long Ladder. In one hand you have stagnancy and in the other pure chaos. I don't envy you for having to tackle issues like this because there is no perfect solution, but I would encourage you to find a balance. Balance is a prerequisite to longevity.

You would not have enjoyed holiday dinners at my house. While my parents were good people, you can't pick your relatives. We had the infamous Uncle Tom and Aunt Janet, who would swallow anything and everything you had in the bathroom medicine cabinet, even if it landed them in the emergency room later. And Grandma, a devout catholic that spent every Sunday at church learning how to love thy neighbor, who would go on long cuss ridden tirades insulting and slurring on minorities. And then there was Uncle Pete, who was thrown out of Bob Evans on Easter Sunday for announcing to the entire dining room that 'He could puke better than this sausage gravy'. I do actually miss Uncle Pete. He did have a hell of a way of getting his point across, and that sausage gravy was totally bunk.

While thinking about it all still raises my blood pressure even 40 years later, those moments brought their behaviors from my subconscious to my conscious where I could take notice of it. It did empower me to actively NOT be like that. I saw first-hand several of my future potential selves and chose to take a higher road. I find a bit of comfort in that. I wonder if I wasn't exposed to those behaviors from a third person perspective, would I have been able to avoid them.

Oh, and sorry about dropping that bomb the other day. I was in a rare mood. I removed it as you rightfully requested of me. In my defense, I used the word appropriately, but I totally understand.

You seem like a decent enough fellow. Best of luck.
