For years now I've wondered why people keep complaining about dialog in movies. Now I've spent a few days in a hotel with a TV stuck on default picture and sound settings. I started a Dune marathon. (He just passed the gom jabbar)

Much of the dialog is far quiter than it should be. Enough to be difficult to understand if I didn't know the movie so well. Even softer sounds I know should be there aren't audible at all. While I wouldn't call the loud portions too loud, I'm in a hotel and don't want to disturb my neighbors, so I'm riding the volume some.

I don't have access to the TV's settings, so I don't know if it's possible to improve things at all. I can say, the built in sound on televisions is certainly not what it should be. It could be improved from factory, with better down-mixing and level curves. That might cause issues with other programs though.

Atraides are about to rescue a harvester. I'll get back to it.

I've always wanted to talk about how weird it was scrolling through reddit and then suddenly seeing myself on the front page. I was banned from reddit for talking about politics (I am anti trump) on the air force reddit so I wasn't even able to comment on a post about me.

For some backstory, I was returning from a Halloween cruise and it was the only clean shirt I had left (I was planning on wearing it during the cruise as there were no children allowed on the cruise and with the theme I thought it would get a few laughs or at least start a conversation). I never did though and doing laundry on a cruise was quite expensive (I think 50 dollars per load or something like that). I tried to hide the shirt as best I could throughout the day as I do think it was slightly inappropriate to wear in a public setting.

For the record, I love all the comments roasting me and I laughed all fucking day reading them!

Anyways, I have always wanted to publicly talk about this and in my search for reddit alternatives I found lemmy so here we are. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

To my mind, Ban has always meant permanent.
"You're banned from this place! You'll never be allowed in again!"

While I've always thought of Suspend as being temporary.
"You're being suspended from school for 1 week, over fighting."

Ban:

When I hear someone mention they were banned my reaction is: "Holy shit! WTF did you do to earn that!" Then I find out it was only for a day or three: "Oh... That's not a Ban! That's minor. Go touch grass. You'll be fine."

I've been banned from subreddits and communities a few times. At least once I never even noticed because it was so short.

How is it a Ban if I didn't even notice?

Why did Ban in online forums and games, come to mean temporary?

Is it simply an example of the intensification of language? To make something mundane, seem more severe than it is?

Does it bother anyone else? Or am I alone here?

I'm genuinely curious about peoples thoughts on this.

It made sense for a while. But the branding change was 16 months ago. The URI change was 3 months ago. Everybody knows now what X is. Yet for some reason, I still see in news stories today:
"... on X — formerly known as Twitter — and said ..."
I really don't think that's needed anymore. But I'm always one to want changes as fast and painless as possible.

So what do you think would be an appropriate amount of time to keep reminding everyone that Twitter is now X?
