Had a pretty busy week and didn't get to read anything.

What about all of you? What have you all been reading or listening to lately?

Started The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J. K. Rowling. Have never been much interested in these in-universe books of Harry Potter, but kid got it from school library so thought might as well read it.

Also reading Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski. Book 2 of The Witcher series.

Finished Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman, book 2 of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

spoiler for book 2I thought Bea will show up in the second book, though it looks like she is actually dead now. Carl has a point if she was still alive some show will have found her by now.

It looks like they are going to do something in future books and split up Carl and Donut. Not a fan of this in most books, so let's see how it goes.

Started Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski. Book 2 of The Witcher series. This is the second short story collection, after which comes the 5 book novel series. I read the series quite a while ago, but never finished all the novels, so re-reading the earlier books to finally complete the series.

Finished The Novice by Trudi Canavan. The second book in The Black Magician trilogy.

Found the second half to be more interesting than the first half, but that is probably just me.

Started Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman, book 2 of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

I finished Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman last week. It's the first book of Dungeon Crawler Carl series.

I mentioned the week before that the litRPG doesn't have high stakes, since you know nothing is going to happen to your character and it's just going to get stronger and stronger, but I failed to realise that this happens when you don't care about any side characters. Which is not to say that something happens (or doesn't happen) to side characters, but that the side characters are well written that you care about them.

Started The Novice by Trudi Canavan. The second book in The Black Magician trilogy.

The first book was completely focused on one place and one task, this book expands the world, and different characters are doing completely different things so it's interesting to see how things will develop. I am still in the start though, and while the book feels as quick to read as the first one, it has quite a bit of bullying in it (at least in the start, where I am), and I am not a fan of reading that, so the progress is going pretty slow. Going to stick with it though, cause it feels like the kind of book where our protagonist is going to become super powerful, with somewhat "good" ending.

One of the rare weeks where I got to read quite a bit.

Read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. A contemporary sci-fi thriller. It's my first Blake Crouch book and I knew nothing while going on. A quick and very enjoyable read. Recommended for thriller fans, if they don't mind sci-fi.

After that, read The Magician's Guild by Trudi Canavan. It's a first book in The Black Magician trilogy, though it does have a prequel book and a sequel trilogy after that, but I don't know if they the follows same characters or if they are different stories, just in the same universe.

The whole book takes place in one city, and stakes are very personal instead of some world saving quest. It was also a quick and very easy to read book.

Finally, started the most read / mentioned book of these weekly threads, Dungeon Crawler Carl. The book is hilarious, it gave me some of that Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy feel in the start, but it's a very different book.

It is very much a litRPG (have we finalised on litRPG now? what happened to Progression Fantasy? It was at least a better name than litRPG, or is there some difference between the two?), and one issue with the genre is there is rarely any feel of real danger (with some exceptions). This seems to be going the same way, but again, I am still in the start of the first book of eight book series, so anything can change. This isn't a negative though, this is kind of why I like these books, sometimes you just want to read about good guy getting the win, without worrying about if they will win, but it is something to note if you are new to the genre.

Enjoying it enough that I have already ordered the next books, not sure if I'll actually read them back to back, but I am definitely going to continue with the series.

Finished When Moon Hits the Eye by John Scalzi.

The book is divided so that each chapter is a new day, and it's from perspective of new people. So there is no story of certain people, rather it's about the "event" and we see things from different people's point of view throughout the book.

I didn't know that, so it took some getting used to, but once I had come to terms with that it was a very interesting book.

Highly recommended for soft sci-fi fans.

Oooh, interesting. That was my first introduction to Sanderson too. Would love to hear what you think about it.

I agree with jordanlund, and consider "comics" as reading. Just read what you enjoy, but nothing wrong with trying out different stuff and see if anything catches your fancy. For instance, I recently learned about autobiographical graphic novels, basically, they are memoirs or auto biographies, but in comic format. Persepolis and Maus are couple of famous examples.

Brandon Sanderson, pretty much buy anything he writes.

For all others, I now wait for the series to complete before getting the books.

I find the question interesting that if there were no libraries, could we start them today? Shows the current state of the world. Well, at least the western world. Can't say much about East, though I guess it would probably be the same.

First, of all, not a leader, just a mod, trying to do my part in making lemmy a nice place for book readers. ๐Ÿ˜€

Dresden Files is a pretty fun series, but it's not some great epitome of literature. It's a fun and easy to read series, and I am realizing after reading all the comment here, it's not for everyone. Personally, I don't have much issue with that. I don't always agree with the characters of my books, but I can understand if people have issues with that. I would suggest reading a couple of books to see if they are for you.

As for where to start, I always prefer to read in published order, (which in this case is also chronological order), but as everyone else has mentioned first couple of books aren't that great. The quality improves a lot from the 3rd one. So, if you start from first one, at least read first 3 to make up your mind. Or, you can read "Dead Beat" first, and if you like it, go back and start from the first one.

If you do start reading it, would love to hear your thoughts on how you like it. You can post in our weekly what are you reading thread, or just make a separate post.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the books are pretty formulaic, (don't know if they improve further along or not), I don't think I would enjoy them reading back to back. But reading them after adding a break of one or two books is keeping them very enjoyable.

Heh.

Just checked the previous comics you posted. Nice work. Looking forward to see more of your work.

Well, technically it's 21 series, not books. ๐Ÿ˜€

I read Brandon's post where he discussed this, and he recommended it too. He said something along the lines of, The Wheel of Time turns. Ages come and pass, and this is another 3rd age, different from the 3rd age in the books, and in this age, this is how things happened.
