While piefed.social is great so far, I would really like to start my own thing for several reasons. But I don't know where to begin and would like to join relevant communities before starting (for example, I heard there are Matrix servers for this, but haven't made the time to actively look for them yet).

Any advice?

I’m building out my PS3 & PS4 physical games library before Sony ends Blu-ray disc production in 2028. As a PSN account is region locked and will be deleted in 3 years of inactivity. Basically no way for your family to inherit your account, unless you give them your password and you keep it hush hush. Also an issue on Steam.

Somebody (presumably from the USA) complained about "Open Street Maps just not being as updated as Google." Unreliable.
That got me thinking. I'm from Europe. To me OSM is very reliable.

First of all I haven't had a Google account or regularly used any of their products for over a decade. So I need to ask.

And by Openstreetmap (OSM) I mean the maps themselves that are used by many apps, routing services, and even secondary map providers.

OSM is community-driven. It requires people to actively participate, or at least deliberately install apps that do that I guess, to create maps and keep them up-to-date.

Google Maps is an app. Where do the maps come from? The data they get automatically (from their users; one might claim it's community driven too, lol) and those cars with those weird cameras on top and probably something else. Maybe they even take from OSM.

OSM probably won't ever be able to "see" traffic jams, but apart from that it works very well, gives me a satisfying mapping and navigation experience by car, bike or foot.

And many big professional/official sites rely on OSM.

So, is that not the case in other places in the world, e.g. the USA? How often do you see these Google cars? I haven't seen one in ages. Let's say once a year.

I hope you get the main drive of my question. It's about how certain "alternatives" to Big tech work, and are perceived, in different places around the world, although the Europe-USA comparison is bugging me the most.

Somehow this comparison just popped in to my head, and to me it speaks deeply to the idea that life by its very nature is contradictory, and that what might seem like brilliant advice in one situation can in fact be downright disastrous advice in another situation.

Which reminds me of a certain phrase that I utterly loathe:

"Everything happens for a reason!"

Feck, no it doesn't. To me, most things happen for a slew of reasons, many of them inscrutable and/or unknown. But we naked apes like order, we do, so we like to oversimplify, rationalize, and normalize whenever possible. Even to the genesis of religious belief, dare I say it.

Anyway yeah, got some contradictory advice / quotes?

For me, I think it might have been over ten years. Not sure tho, might have climbed one in the meantime. But either way, it was too long.

HOW do you guys tip in the US? Do you go by food total or bill total? I know it's frowned upon in other countries, I'm not here to question or debate that.

For me, I tip "15%" but round numbers. The bill is $72, so I take 10% (7.20 but round up to 8 then add 4) which ends up $12.

If they were exceptional, I just go off 20% which is $16 by my method, and round the total to the nearest dollar... ~~but even that isn't their pretend 18%!! And technically my method is over 20% after rounding up. They're all just taking advantage of niceness and guilt for patrons having to tip everyone.~~

Edit: I fucked up being hung up on numbers, not realizing to the left was the explanation. 😅 OK, so just: how do y'all tip?

We often tend to think of culture as "the way a group of people do things". For reasons relevant to conversations where culture is important (e.g. conversations about cultural appropriation), where would you say this starts and ends? Are cities able to present themselves as if one were presenting a culture (e.g. saying I am taking part in cultural appropriation for dressing like someone from Buffalo)? What about religions, disabilities, etc.? What about fictional cultures? Am wondering because the more I think of culture as being purely geographic, the more my mind thinks "wait, this can't be right".

Please inform me about them so I can lengthen my reasons to boycott.

How can i make it production ? i use cloudflare tunnel. I also want to change logo and name of the site. i would be happy if someone helped me. Actually my main goal is to create my own reddit alternative (like a kind of local social media site) on my country i want to combine blorp and piefed i don’t really want federation.

I heard the concept from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and It sounds like one of the end game goals for linux users. Imagine smuggling a €50 laptop component to see the free internet from anywhere on the globe.
